The winter fit problem, in one sentence

Winter does not change the fit rule, it changes the waist you are fitting over. Fit the carrier high and tight over the layers you are actually wearing, not over the clothes you wore in summer.

If you put a summer fit over a coat, the waistband will feel loose, the seat will slip, and the weight will pull. If you refit over the coat, the seat feels secure again. That refit takes a minute, and it is worth doing every time you change layers.

When the extender helps in winter

The Hip Carrier fits waists from 23 to 44 inches, and the waistband extender adds 23 inches, to a total of up to 70 inches. Get the extender if any of these are true in winter: your waist with layers is close to 44 inches, the waistband barely closes over a coat, Velcro is still exposed after you close it, or you want to share the carrier with a larger caregiver in winter clothes.

The extender also helps when two caregivers of very different sizes share one carrier in winter. With a quick Velcro and clip, each person can refit for their own layers, instead of fighting a fit that was set for someone else.

Coats, babies, and hands free needs

Keep your baby close enough to kiss, chin off chest, and check that a bulky coat is not pushing your baby away from you or covering their face. If a coat makes the fit hard to check, take the coat off indoors and refit, or use a thinner layer under the carrier and a blanket over the top when you go back outside.

For winter errands where you need both hands free, for bags, doors, or holding an older child's hand, add the Snug. The hip seat alone is not hands free, and winter gloves do not change that. The 2 in 1 system is 12 to 45 lbs facing inward and 16 to 45 lbs facing outward, and it is not for newborns.

Questions about winter carrying

Can I wear a Tushbaby over a winter coat?

Yes, but refit it high and tight over the layers you are actually wearing. Do not just use your summer fit over a coat.

Do I need the waistband extender in winter?

You may, if layers push your waist close to 44 inches or the waistband barely closes. The extender adds 23 inches, to a total of up to 70 inches.

Is the hip seat hands free in winter?

No, the hip seat alone is not hands free. Keep a hand or arm on your child, and add the Snug if you need both hands free.
