Up, down, up again. That is the whole toddler stage, and it is the job the hip seat is built for. Your toddler wants up to see something, down to walk, up again because they are tired, down again because they saw a rock. A wrap takes too long to redo each time. A structured carrier takes too long to strap in and out. The hip seat is already on your waist, so up and down is just a lift and a seat.
That is also why Tushbaby won for me over the carriers I tested. It grows with your baby all the way into toddlerdom at heavier weights, it does not require constant adjustments, and it lets a baby or toddler move more freely, which is great for finicky babies who do not like feeling restricted.
Up and down works for short, repeated carries: grocery store runs, theme park queues, playgrounds, family visits, and errands where a stroller is more trouble than it is worth. The Hip Carrier is up to 3 years old or 45 lbs, and seated carrying starts once your baby can hold their head up.
Up and down does not work as a full day plan. For a long walk, a nap, or a full day out, bring a stroller too. For a job where you need both hands free for a long stretch, add the Snug. The hip seat alone is not hands free, so keep a hand or arm on your child when using the seat alone.
With other hands free carriers, I felt the weight pulling down on my back. With the seat under my child, that pull felt different, because the seat took much of the weight at my waist. That is my experience, not a medical promise, and bodies and babies are different.
